{"id":8821,"date":"2022-05-14T19:00:44","date_gmt":"2022-05-14T22:00:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/107.161.183.10\/~mte\/en\/?post_type=produtosmte&#038;p=8821"},"modified":"2023-05-30T16:12:27","modified_gmt":"2023-05-30T19:12:27","slug":"engine-coolant-fan-switch","status":"publish","type":"produtosmte","link":"https:\/\/mte-thomson.com\/en\/produtosmte\/engine-coolant-fan-switch\/","title":{"rendered":"Engine Coolant Fan Switch"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><b>Operation<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As the name implies, these switches activate several parts of the cooling system, according to the temperature of the engine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Application<\/b><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Radiator fan<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: as it is activated, it forces the passage of air through the radiator, assisting with the coolant temperature.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Warning <\/b><b>lamp<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><b>and alarms<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: as they are activated, they inform possible overheating in the cooling system.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Operation Principle<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The main component of the engine coolant fan switch (or thermoswitch) is the bimetal disc. Formed by two metals with different thermal expansion coefficients, the bimetal disk is calibrated to snap at a specific temperature. This sensor not only activates the gauge that informs the coolant temperature increase, but also informs the temperature excess to the instrument panel (via warning lights or alarms). (For more information, please refer to the Temperature Sensor article.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b>Location<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When used to activate the fan, the\u00a0thermoswitch\u00a0will be located in the vehicle\u2019s radiator. When used to activate a warning lamp or alarm, it might be located near the thermostat or at many other places in the engine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Use<\/b><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Activates the fan when the coolant temperature in the radiator exceeds the specified limit. This usually occurs when the vehicle is operating in heavy traffic.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Activates a warning lamp on the vehicle\u2019s instrument panel or a sound alarm.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>When It Does Not Work<\/b><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The temperature of the coolant in the radiator increases so much that it boils, causing the engine to overheat, burning and deforming the cylinder head gasket, damaging hoses, causing the coolant to leak, among other consequences.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Diagnosis<\/b><\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The switch does not activate \u2013 it is inoperative.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The switch activates out of the specified temperature range.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In both cases, the diagnosis can be made in the manufacture site, with the use of specific test equipment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Activation Temperatures<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The activation temperature is indicated in all product codes.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Switch of one temperature with one terminal:\u00a0<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MTE-THOMSON Number:\u00a0<\/span><b>3046.115<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">;\u00a0ON\u00a0at 115 \u00b0C.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Switch of one temperature with two terminals:\u00a0<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MTE-THOMSON Number:\u00a0<\/span><b>705.92\/87<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">;\u00a0ON\u00a0at 92 \u00b0C and\u00a0OFF\u00a0at 87 \u00b0C.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Switch of two temperatures:\u00a0<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MTE-THOMSON Number:\u00a0<\/span><b>717.95-102<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">;\u00a0ON\u00a0at 95 \u00b0C (activating the first fan speed) and\u00a0then\u00a0at 102 \u00b0C (activating the second fan speed). Used in vehicles equipped with an A\/C system.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For temperature information in Fahrenheit please refer MTE-THOMSON catalog<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b>Maintenance<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><b>Important actions when changing the fan switch:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avoid excessive tightening.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bleed air out of the cooling system (remove air bubbles).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b>Care<\/b><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Make sure the\u00a0 temperature switch is appropriate for each vehicle model.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Never perform maintenance while the cooling system is still hot, due to high risk of burns.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At any evidence of overheating, park the vehicle in a safe place and turn off the engine immediately, otherwise you may damage the engine.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Check the coolant level weekly, with a cold engine.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Always use the specified coolant for your vehicle at the proper rate.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do not fill up the coolant reservoir with plain water, since this dilutes the coolant concentration.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Any reduction in the coolant level may indicate a leak in the cooling system.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Perform the temperature sensor preventive maintenance every 30,000 km.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b>Warranty<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All MTE-THOMSON products are guaranteed for 01 (one) year against faulty materials or manufacturing defects.
