{"id":8826,"date":"2022-05-13T19:03:07","date_gmt":"2022-05-13T22:03:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/107.161.183.10\/~mte\/en\/?post_type=produtosmte&#038;p=8826"},"modified":"2023-05-30T16:01:47","modified_gmt":"2023-05-30T19:01:47","slug":"air-charge-temperature-sensor","status":"publish","type":"produtosmte","link":"https:\/\/mte-thomson.com\/en\/produtosmte\/air-charge-temperature-sensor\/","title":{"rendered":"Air Charge Temperature Sensor"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><b>Operation<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These thermometer-like devices convert temperature into electric signals to be interpreted by on-board electronic systems.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b>Application<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Used in on-board electronic systems to measure the following:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Air charge temperature:\u00a0In electronic injection and electronic ignition systems, they measure the temperature of the ingested air.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Indoor and outdoor<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">room temperature<\/span><b>:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> In electronic climate systems, they measure the air temperature.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Battery temperature:\u00a0In integrated alternator control systems, they measure the temperature of the battery.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b>Operation Principle<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The main components of temperature sensors for automotive systems are thermistors \u2013\u00a0resistors of the NTC type, which stands for negative temperature coefficient. These sensors contain a capsule where the NTC element is assembled (Fig. 1).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-10217 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/mte-thomson.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/1-Air-Temperature-Sensor.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"129\" height=\"274\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As shown below (Fig. 2), the main feature of this thermistor is an accentuated variation in its electric resistance in relation to the temperature it is subjected to.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>temperature increase <\/b><b>-&gt;<\/b><b> resistance decrease<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><b>temperature decrease<\/b><b> -&gt;<\/b><b> resistance increase<\/b><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-10214 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/mte-thomson.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/2-Air-Temperature-Sensor.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"160\" height=\"173\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The assembly of the sensor depends on the intended application. If used to measure the temperature of the engine, the NTC element is located inside a protection capsule, isolated from the coolant. As for sensors aimed at measuring air temperature (air cooling, indoor or outdoor air), the NTC element is exposed to the air flow.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><b>Important:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0The air charge temperature sensor (ACT) can be associated to the manifold absolute pressure (MAP) sensor, forming a combined sensor that in some cases is identified by the MAT acronym.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b>Location<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><b>Air charge\u00a0 temperature sensor:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0In the intake manifold (multi-point systems) or on the\u00a0 cap of the throttle body\u00a0 (mono-point systems).<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b>Use<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><b>The air charge temperature sensor is used to:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">adjust the point of ignition.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">calculate the mass of ingested air in speed density systems.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>When It Does Not Work<\/b><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Air temperature sensor: Detonation; irregular idle speed, overheating.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Maintenance<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><b>Important actions when changing the temperature sensor:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avoid excessive tightening.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bleed air out of the cooling system (remove air bubbles).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Diagnosis<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><b>Three types of fault apply to these sensors:<\/b><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The sensor sends the wrong information, but within its range.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The sensor sends the wrong information outside its range (the sensor is short or open circuited).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The information is wrong (short or open circuit) for certain temperatures (intermittent fault).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In all cases, the diagnosis can be made with a OBD2 Scanner equipment or a voltmeter.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><b>For case 1:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0Visualize operation parameters and make comparisons with actual engine temperature or cooling air temperature.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><b>For case 2:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0Use the mode for reading stored faults.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><b>For case 3:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0With the sensor connected and using a voltmeter, check for possible non discontinuities (tension peaks) in the sensor\u2019s signal measurement, while the engine heats from room temperature to its regular working temperature. The sensor analysis (short or open circuit) requires an ohmmeter. To check the calibration, in addition to the ohmmeter, the characteristic curve and the calibration table supplied by the manufacturer are necessary.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b>Care<\/b><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Make sure the electronic temperature sensor is appropriate for each vehicle model.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Never perform maintenance while the cooling system is still hot, due to high risk of burns.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At any evidence of overheating, park the vehicle in a safe place and turn off the engine immediately, otherwise you may damage the engine.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Check the coolant level weekly, with a cold engine.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Always use the specified coolant for your vehicle at the proper rate.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Perform the temperature sensor preventive maintenance every 30,000 km.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b>Warranty<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All MTE-THOMSON products are guaranteed for 01 (one) year against faulty materials or manufacturing defects.
