If a sensor has problems, the vehicle may not work.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>What Is the Function of the Rotation Sensors?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Through the pulsed signal sent by the rotation sensor, the control unit calculates the rotation speed of the axle where the sensor is installed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>What Are Their Applications and Uses?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rotation sensors can be:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Revolutions per minute (RPM) and crankshaft position (CKP) sensors;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Camshaft position (CMP) sensors;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vehicle speed sensors (VSS);<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wheel speed sensors, used in anti-lock braking systems (ABS).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>How They Work<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The rotation sensor is always associated with a toothed disc or a disc that is alternately magnetized. Currently, these are the most used types:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Variable reluctance sensor<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hall effect sensor<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Magneto-resistive element (MRE) sensor<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Variable Reluctance Sensor<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This sensor consists of a permanent magnet with a pickup coil over it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whenever teeth or marks pass by the magnetic sensor, the reluctance of the magnetic circuit decreases; otherwise, the reluctance increases.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thus, when the wheel turns, the magnetic flux changes. This flow variation induces a variable voltage in the pickup coil \u2013 in the form of pulses, synchronized with the teeth passing by the magnet.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the sensor terminals, it is possible to measure voltage pulses every time a tooth passes by the sensor. The electrical resistance of the piece is sensitive to the presence of a magnetic field. Thus, as the magnetic field varies, so do the resistance and the current in the circuit, consequently. An electronic circuit inside the sensor converts current variations into voltage variations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The figure below shows a hall effect-based rotation sensor, as configured for distributor engines. The magnetic flux that reaches the sensor varies due to the presence or absence of an impeller vane.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the example, the impeller interposes between the magnet and the sensitive element. The sensitive element can modify its resistance according to the intensity of the magnetic field passing through it. When the disc rotates, the magnets cause the magnetic field variation, which reaches the magneto-resistive element.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a consequence, its resistance varies as well. An associated electronic circuit transforms resistance variations into voltage variations, thus generating the pulsed signal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-10209 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/mte-thomson.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/3-Sensor-Rotacao.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"241\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mte-thomson.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/3-Sensor-Rotacao.jpg 400w, https:\/\/mte-thomson.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/3-Sensor-Rotacao-300x181.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Engate p\/ engrenagem (sa\u00edda trasmiss\u00e3o): Gear Attachment<\/li>\n<li>Circuito Eletr\u00f4nico: Electronic Circuit<\/li>\n<li>\u00cdm\u00e3: Magnet<\/li>\n<li>Engate p\/ flex\u00edvel veloc\u00edmetro: Impeller<\/li>\n<li>Disco magnetizado: Speedometer Attachment<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b>Where Are They Located?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The location of a rotation sensor depends on its application:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Engine speed sensor: Associated to a toothed wheel, integrated to the crankshaft, or installed in the distributor.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Camshaft position sensor: Installed on the headstock or installed on a device mechanically connected to the camshaft \u2013 in case of cam-in-block engines.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vehicle speed sensor: Associated to a toothed wheel installed at the transmission output or activated by the speedometer flex shaft.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wheel speed sensor (ABS): Installed on the wheel hub, associated to a toothed wheel. In some rear-wheel drive vehicles, it is installed in the rear wheels drive shaft.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>When the Rotation Sensor Doesn\u2019t Work<\/b><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When the defect results in a fault condition out of the sensor\u2019s range (short circuit or open circuit), a fault code is written to memory and can be recovered using testing equipment (a scanner). In this case, the corresponding system enters a state of emergency. As for the wheel speed sensor (ABS), in this case, the system is deactivated.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When the defect results in a fault condition within the sensor\u2019s operating range, the fault code is usually not recorded<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The symptoms depend on the application. The most compromised are:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Engine speed sensors: The engine may not run or stop abruptly.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wheel speed sensors (ABS): May cause erratic system operation.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Diagnosis<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A scanning tool is recommended to check parameters such as \u201cRotation\u201d, \u201cVehicle Speed\u201d, and \u201cWheel Speed\u201d (ABS).<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Also, diagnosis may rely on recovering possible fault codes stored in memory.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In variable reluctance sensors, the coil can be checked with an ohmmeter. The generated signal can be verified with a voltmeter (not a pen-type) by rotating the corresponding axle at a certain speed.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Magneto-resistive and Hall effect sensors can be diagnosed with a voltmeter or a polarity test pen. The signal can be verified by slowly rotating the corresponding axle.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Can the \u201cCheck Engine\u201d Light Indicate a Problem with a Rotation Sensor?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yes, it can! It is very important to take the car to a mechanic shop as soon as possible to have it checked<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Problems with this sensor may cause the vehicle to malfunction.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Warranty<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All MTE-THOMSON products are guaranteed for 01 (one) year against faulty materials or manufacturing defects.
